Kate supports a number of charities which help children, adults and animals in the UK and around the world.
Kate is enormously honoured to have become a Patron for The Eternal Forest Trust on Pen Llyn in North Wales.
Kate visited this beautiful woodland burial site when filming in north Wales for Off the Beaten Track. Coedwig Boduan as it is known locally – has led the way with green burials and is the only mature woodland burial site in north Wales.
As a champion of green burials, Kate said: “I’m delighted this beautiful burial ground continues to prove a much-needed alternative to conventional cemeteries & provides such an uplifting and special place for many more people to be laid to rest and remembered.”
People from all over the UK have plots at Coedwig Boduan and they want to ensure that anyone, whatever their means, can afford a green burial plot.
Bees for Development is the global charity which makes life better with bees. They promote sustainable beekeeping to combat poverty, build resilient livelihoods and benefit biodiversity.
We all get so much from bees as they pollinate food crops and wild plants. Honey bees enable people to make a living through working with nature, harvesting honey and beeswax, while helping to preserve biodiversity. Beekeeping is low cost, sustainable, and has the greatest effect on those who have the very least.
Bees for Development shares beekeeping skills with people in the poorest communities of the world, giving a reliable, sustainable income for life. They use local skills, local materials and local bees.
You can also visit the Bees for Development shop at 1 Agincourt St, Monmouth, where you can pick plenty of fabulous bee related items.
The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) does amazing work to preserve vital habitat for wetland birds all over the world.
There are a number of WWT centres around Britain, including the London Wetlands Centre; Martin Mere in Lancashire, where Bill Oddie and Kate spent many a happy hour for Autumnwatch; and Slimbridge, which is close to the Humble by Nature farm. These WWT centres are great places for people of any age to learn about and see some of the world’s most spectacular birds.
Farms for City Children is an education charity founded by Michael and Clare Morpurgo in 1976. Kate is delighted to support this charity and be their Vice President.
Each year, the charity offers over 3,200 children a week of muck and magic at one of their three farms. A week-long stay at one of our farms inspires children to get stuck in and enjoy all that the countryside has to offer them—from sunshine and fresh air, right through to mud and manure! But it is in amongst the muck (come rain or shine) that the magic really happens.
Out of the normal classroom environment and away from the inner city life that is everyday normality for these children they are encouraged to try new things, broaden their horizons and overcome their fears. For so many of the visiting children a garden, rolling hills and real live animals are the kind of things they see on the TV. But on the farm they have it all to experience! As a result of a hardworking and very fun week’s work, children discover new confidence and independence. And as they work together, talk and value one another for what they can achieve, their self esteem blossoms.
Medical Detection Dogs trains dogs to detect the odour of human disease. It is at the forefront of the research into the fight against cancer and helping people with life-threatening diseases.
The charity has two arms, bio detection dogs and medical alert assistance dogs. The bio detection dogs are trained to find the odour of diseases, such as cancer, in urine, breath and sweat swabs. The medical alert assistance dogs are trained to detect minute changes in the odour of an individual with a long-term, life-threatening condition, like type 1 diabetes. The dog will alert its owner to an impending medical crisis so they can take action to prevent it and keep themselves safe.
Medical Detection Dogs receives no government funding and relies on kind donations from the public.
